Mr. Manes' practice focuses on tax, estate, financial, retirement and business planning with strong emphasis on closely held businesses. Mr. Manes holds an undergraduate degree from Kent State University and a law degree from the University of Toledo; he also holds a Master of Laws in Taxation degree from New York University.Mr. Manes represents individuals and families owning closely held businesses; counsels them on business succession, acquisitions, sales, mergers and reorganizations. He has published articles and has lectured on estate planning for owners of closely held businesses and has been an instructor in taxation, pension planning and executive compensation for the American College of Chartered Life Underwriters and the College for Financial Planning.In addition, Mr. Manes has an active tax litigation practice. He is admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. His most notable tax litigation was the successful representation before the United States Tax Court and the Supreme Court of the United States of various financial institutions that participated in mortgage swaps [Cottage Savings Association v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue Service, 499 U.S. 554 (1991)].
